The Anti-Terrorism Act and the President’s visit to Germany.President Anura Kumara announced on his Facebook page that he is visiting Germany at the invitation of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. He departed from the island on June 10 for this official visit to the Federal Republic of Germany.
During his visit, President Anura Kumara plans to hold bilateral discussions with the German President, government ministers, and high-level representatives. His main focus will be on strengthening relations between the two countries in the areas of trade, digital economy, investment, and vocational training.
He will also participate in the Business Forum and several business meetings organised by the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Additionally, he intends to meet with Sri Lankans living in Germany.
Accompanying him on this visit are the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism, Mr. Vijitha Herath, along with a group of senior government officials.
On a related note, Mahesh Munasinghe expressed his enthusiasm on Facebook, stating, “Excited to strengthen relations and explore new opportunities!” President Anura Kumara echoed this sentiment as he left for Germany.
However, a report by the Daily Mirror on May 24 indicated that Germany will inquire about the actions the government is taking to repeal the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) and address issues of reconciliation and wartime accountability during the visit. The report also mentioned that Germany, along with other Western powers, has been advocating for the repeal of the PTA for some time. Furthermore, it is reported that the Tamil diaspora in Germany is preparing to hold a protest against President Anura Kumara, which is likely to take place on June 11, the day of his arrival in Germany.
