Appointing an officer accused over the Easter Sunday attacks as the police chief is a grave insult to the victims of the terror attacks, said Catholic Church spokesman Rev. Fr. Cyril Gamini.

Speaking to the media, he also strongly disapproved of giving promotions or responsibilities to the accused officers.

There are moves to cover up their crime and appoint them to top positions in order to serve the wants of politicians, he charged.

The Colombo archbishop’s written request to the IGP for action against the officers named by three commissions of inquiry was yet to be acknowledged at least, said Fr. Gamini.

A presidential commission alone had cost more than Rs. 91 million, and failure to implement its recommendations is a wastage of public money, he said.
