A “Negombo Aluwa” making program was held (March 11) by the Negombo Divisional Secretariat in celebration of International Women’s Day. Women from various local women’s associations participated in this event. Among the attendees were Deputy Minister of Labour and Member of Parliament Mahinda Jayasinghe, Deputy Minister of Sports Sugath Thilakaratne, President of the Negombo Tourism Professionals Association Mr. A. Warnakumara, as well as Negombo Secretary and Divisional Secretary Mrs. Rasika Mallawarachchi.




The program included a “Negombo Aluwa” preparation competition among the members of the women’s associations within the Negombo Divisional Secretariat Division. Thirteen teams competed in this event, with the Dungalpitiya Velakkanni Mata Kantha Society taking third place, the Bolawalana United Mata Kantha Society securing second place, and the first place awarded to the Dakunu Pallansena Suhadini Kantha Society. Consolation prizes were also given to the other participating teams.
Following the competition, a demonstration of how to prepare “Negombo Aluwa,” a local delicacy renowned worldwide, was conducted. The demonstration was led by Mrs. Jacintha, a 76-year-old expert from the Munnakkara area of Negombo, who shared her special knowledge of the recipe.
Prizes were presented to the winning women’s societies in the Negombo Aluwa Preparation Competition by honoured guests. A large number of women from various societies in the Negombo Divisional Secretariat and many local residents, who enjoy the flavours of “Negombo Aluwa” and were eager to learn the proper preparation method, also attended the event to celebrate Women’s Day.
