Holding processions is completely prohibited with an election being announced, said police spokesman Nihal Thalduwa in reference to the protest organized by the National People’s Power in Colombo.

The procession was dispersed, but the police did not disrupt their rally, said SSP Thalduwa.

Police will not prevent peaceful protests that have the proper permission, but marches and processions are not allowed, he said.

Any party has the freedom to hold meetings and rallies, said the police spokesman.

HRCSL calls for report within 24 hrs

Meanwhile, the Human Rights Commission has directed IGP C.D. Wickremaratne to submit a report within 24 hours into the water cannon and teargas attack on the NPP protestors.

In a statement, the HRCSL said it is also investigating the incident.

NNP’s Tilvyn Silva wants president Ranil Wickremesinghe led government to take full responsibility for the crackdown on their democratic protest.

Speaking to the media yesterday, he said playing games with human lives in that manner was a very serious matter.
The NPP held a peaceful protest against the denial of the people’s right to elections, Silva added.
